December 7, Can someone explain to me what the difference between a sexual relationship and a romantic relationship is? I always pasted the two together and never though of it until now. I am demisexual, I have never been in a relationship that was more than the close friendships I have, so I truly do not understand. I am new by the way, hello everyone. Hi Embrace, I’m new here too, and trying to sort out my own demisexuality.
I would say that the difference would be pretty obvious. A purely sexual relationship is like “friends-with-benefits” – just the bumping of uglies, no emotional connection or commitment. A romantic relationship would be all the extra bells and whistles – the hand-holding, the hugging, the I-love-you’s, maybe some kissing or making out whatever floats your boat , and of course all the little gestures that going along with respecting someone.
And with just a simple close platonic friendship, there would be more boundaries, an expectation that you are only good friends and that there won’t be any romantic notions or partnership commitment in the future. Of course, sexuals can have all of the above rolled into one, whereas for demis like us, it’s a bit harder. But in some ways I think it’s easier because if we find someone else who wants the same thing as us, we don’t have to deal with all of the complications sexuals have, like being cheated on, getting knocked up or AIDS, and always feeling like they need to leave their options open so they can’t commit to one person and be happy.
I think we’re lucky that we’re able to see fellow humans as people instead of objects.

A lot of people may say that age is a state of mind, that a person is only as old as they feel. That is an upbeat and optimistic approach to aging; however the question is if that applies when it comes to relationships.
There is this idea that we have one soul mate and that real love stories are supposed to be filled with obstacles and drama. Most of the love stories we see in pop culture are rooted in infatuation …not real love. Some degree of infatuation is fine, but a relationship entirely rooted in infatuation is usually doomed. What do I mean by love and fixation? Well, when you love someone, it is pretty effortless. Fixation, on the other hand, does not feel pleasant.
It does not feel good, but it does feel very urgent, very important, and very stressful. It feels like you need them… like you must have them treat you a certain way, give you a certain relationship title, or somehow prove their commitment to you.
