After all, I told him we would start with the irrelevant questions. Their self-titled debut was released earlier this month via Dualtone and has already made a dent on the Billboard Charts. Schultz and I chatted recently to discuss everything from lemon drop shots to the best gas stations. And when I reminded him that the album had recently landed at 43, he responded with a genuine sense of unassuming nonchalance. The album, according to Schultz, was written over three years—with some songs coming out fully written in about three months, and others presenting more songwriting and recording challenges. When we took a moment to talk in more detail about the songwriting process, Schultz was able to communicate some of the finer nuances of a process that many fans find mysterious, and many artists struggle to describe: Generally speaking it involves a piano, a guitar, and maybe singing, and we usually start out with the chord structure, a set of chords, a melody especially, and then the lyrics usually follow. Schultz spoke with ease about what it looks like, what it feels like, and how inexplicable the end result can be, how unexpected moments of listening and playing an instrument aimlessly can lead to full fledged songs. He had a way with words that allowed an outsider to truly look in and unpack the enigma of powerful songwriting. The band, who will play at The Basement in Nashville on Friday, April 27, is in the midst of a several month tour across the United States.

By Rich Cline Excellent A gently comical undertone makes this thriller even creepier than expected, bolstered by sharp writing and directing from Dan Giloy and an especially clever performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. Comparisons to Taxi Driver have been obvious, as the lead character is a potentially dangerous sociopath on a very personal quest. And the film also taps into the current zeitgeist: It’s a thoroughly unnerving film that often feels more like a very grim satire than a proper thriller.
Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a loner who is desperate to make his mark on the world. Searching for something to do, he stumbles across the people who prowl the city streets after dark in search of an event they can film and sell on to a TV news outlet. Learning from a veteran Bill Paxton , Lou gets his own camera and a police scanner and starts chasing car crashes, house fires and violent crimes all over Los Angeles.
And when he finds that TV news director Nina Rene Russo wants to buy his footage, he hires Rick Riz Ahmed as an assistant, getting even more aggressive about arriving on the scene before the competition. But Lou isn’t willing to settle for that, and starts manipulating the news to get even better stories. Where this goes from here is pretty unimaginable, as Lou reveals himself to be utterly unencumbered by any hint of a moral compass. Of course, this is a central theme of the movie, as it explores the way audiences clamour for more explosive footage, which pretty much eliminates any sense of human decency in the way events are covered.
Gyllenhaal portrays Lou as gaunt and hungry, but with an eerie charm that lets him get away with each audacious manoeuvre. Watching him snap at anyone who crosses him is truly terrifying.

Written by Denham Sadler on Mar 29, A fortunate crowd were treated to a warm and engaging performance by The Lumineers in the familiar surrounds of The Corner Hotel last week. The connection was obvious between the pair, and accompanied by just guitar and at times a stomp box and melodica, the sparse backing allowed the enchanting vocals to shine. Joined by two extra, now full-time members on bass and keys, the line up created a more layered and full sound compared to the album. It also featured drummer Jeremiah Fraites standing and utilising the roof for a drum kit.
The band also played a brand new, as yet untitled song; a duet between Schultz and Pekarek that showcased her wonderful voice, something all too rare on their first record. The song was a lovely change of pace for the show and it seems destined to be their next big song. Schultz again requested for all phones to be put away, and even stopped the song when a sneaky individual began recording. With piano accordionist Stelth Ulvang precariously perched on a small table, the others emerging among the masses and a hushed silence, it was a truly special moment and one to be remembered only by those who were there.

Anderson East – Bowery Ballroom January 11, – New York Anderson East is the humble type — the sort of man who chalks up his success to loads of good fortune. But the singer-songwriter has earned his accolades: Best exemplified on his breakout debut album, Delilah, the Alabama-native wields an unwavering and potent, ever-husky voice. And as seen on standout tracks including “Satisfy Me” and “Devil In Me,” he’s able to effortlessly spin tales of tumult and triumph in equal measure.
That’s of course to say nothing of the brute force with which the man performs — fiery and forceful, as much a wily preacher as a patient poet, East has become one of music’s must-see live act. Having recently completed a forthcoming new album with producer Dave Cobb at Nashville’s famed RCA Studio A, and preparing to release its first single later this summer, East is hitting the road this summer with Chris Stapleton on the singer’s “All-American Road Show.

Elephants are at greatest risk. Ever since a shocking National Geographic cover story in raised awareness about the plight of elephants in Africa, the animals have become a cause celebre, with luminaries such as Hillary Clinton, the prince of Wales and basketball star Yao Ming working to save them. But many other iconic creatures are even closer to being extinct. Tigers, targeted by poachers and sold for use in traditional Chinese medicines , are down to only 3, in the wild.
A century ago, they numbered more than , worldwide. The remaining 25, rhinos in Africa are ruthlessly pursued for their horns, which some people falsely believe hold healing value against such ailments as rheumatism. On the black market, a pound of rhino horn — despite being made of the same material as human fingernails and hair — fetches a price greater than that of gold or cocaine. And species are suffering under the surface of our oceans, too. In Asia, shark fins are a delicacy used in soup: Elephants get most of the attention, but species loss is widespread and even more severe among other animals.

Cleopatra is all about perspective and The Lumineers have successfully and cleverly captured that, putting a deeper existential turn on their otherwise easy-going acoustic vibe. Alluding to the Shakespearean tragic character, Schultz is sentimental to the point of almost becoming annoying, but what ultimately saves the song is its unique perspective. This is more than a song about impossible love — it is rather a song about a love complicated by fame and the spotlight, which gives its modern relevance.
The track tells the story of a woman filled with regrets about her past. There is almost no trace of earlier nonchalance and idyllic Americana simplicity, even thought The Lumineers sound just as comfortable in a darker strain of their rhythmic folk with gospel elements.

I think there are different kinds of negativity in life. Some negativity can sting, and other kinds seem have no weight. History[ edit ] — Early years[ edit ] When Schultz and Fraites originally began to collaborate, writing together and playing gigs around New York City , they did so under various names including Free Beer, 6Cheek, and Wesley Jeremiah. It wasn’t serious at first. We were a crappy band doing terrible covers. But we slowly started getting away from covers and writing originals. We were doing everything: There was no focus; it was a mad, random mess. So I decided to do something about it.
